ben kaya is an american, brussels-based composer and performer. central to his practice is curating and bringing to the surface observable auditory phenomena through acoustic and electro-acoustic works. his music is best described as a highlighting of these phenomena in a societal frame, leaving space for personal reflection of your own presence and (un)conscious actions. he researches utilizing these natural occurrences such as just intonation, resonant frequencies of objects and spaces, and spatialization as compositional tools for furthering expression, with the belief that if an aspect of sound is natural then we must do our best to work within what is already present rather than attempt to fight against. he works primarily with scores and instructions to translate his vision to players. to perfect his vision he has developed his own scoring system based on formic shapes, with an emphasis on the players also interacting with the material in an unpredictable way. his compositions often include the use of alternative tuning systems, electronics as extensions acoustic instrumentation, and acoustic phenomenon. using shapes and free flowing form as a compositional tool for the structure of relationships in space. among sound he also works with light, projection and physical materials in installation, collaborative performance and dance works that carry a similar ethos to his sound practice.

he is a co-founder of the brussels-based contemporary ensemble 'a wire frame.' he achieved a bachelor's from california institute of the arts (calarts) studying with wolfgang von schweinitz and others and is in progress of completing his final year of master's at the koninklijk conservatorium of brussels studying with annelies van parys and benjamin van esser. his master's thesis research focuses on the harmonic series and its use cases practically to evoke emotion not easily accessed with standard tuning systems. his works have been shown at several international venues and spaces including but not limited to: kanal-centre pompidou, lothringer 13 halle, the reef, wavecave and atoma art centre. he has held residence with 25av, la bellone, the reef, budascoop, in situ, bodies in space and more.
